Haiti Relief in Nyack

As we all grieve and look for ways to help our Haitian brothers and sisters, we are grateful to those who have been leading the way-Konbit Neg Lekay among others in Rockland County. We compiled this list with help from Konbit Neg Lekay in Spring Valley and Nyack Public Schools along with updates from other organizations.  We appreciate them and all our community partners for coming together and supporting our Haitian community in Rockland and Haiti. The generosity of the community we call home is always so moving.

Many of the families and young people we serve are still trying to find
information about their families. Please continue to remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

Please let me know of any other efforts you are aware of so we can spread the word and feel free to e-mail this to anyone you think would be interested. These are meant to be resources and not endorsements of any groups or program.

There are plans in the works for a Nyack fundraiser for Haiti-anyone interested in helping with those efforts please e-mail me at kim.cross@nyackcenter.org.

Thank you for your help and generosity,
Kim

Take Action-
One very concrete step we can all take to assist the people is Haiti is to advocate for the immediate cancellation of Haiti's $890 million debt and ensure that any emergency earthquake assistance is provided in the form of grants, not debt incurring loans.

Go to www.one.org and click on "take action" under Help Haiti, Drop the Debt.  That will take you to a very simple petition to sign urging our government to take this most important step.

Local Kids raise funds and make a difference-With thanks to so many of you who were able to make it to Stop & Shop 1/19, the kids had a terrific time and performed a valuable community service for the people of Haiti.  It was a great example of what an enthusiastic, motivated group of kids can do (their smiling faces are attached) - singing songs, cheering, holding up signs, even doing cartwheels, for over 4 hours! - raising an incredible $505.16 (along with a container full of baby formula, Parmalat and water) to support the relief efforts in Haiti. They proudly delivered these funds to the American Red Cross here in Nyack. Charlotte, Ryan and Cecilia Weiss were Zuliema Perez-Soto, Caroline Dillon, Abby Marraccino, Jenny Haera, and Jeff and Jerry Dangler all participated. Thanks to all of you for your generosity and encouragement.

Wednesday 13 January 2010: ShelterBox responds to Haiti earthquake

ShelterBox is responding to the scenes of destruction in Haiti. A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is currently being mobilised with two SRT members from the USA and one from the UK leading the response. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean island of Haiti at close to 2200 GMT on Tuesday, January 12. Initial reports state that hundreds of people are feared dead while thousands of people have been left homeless. ShelterBox General Manager Lasse Petersen said: 'We're doing everything we can to ensure immediate aid reaches the people of Haiti. The process of getting our team on the ground is well under way. 'We were in Haiti eighteen months ago, delivering aid after a series of hurricanes left thousands homeless. We'll now be working closely with our contacts on the ground in the country to make sure we get aid to the people who need it most during the current crisis. Our thoughts go out to the people who have been affected by this disaster.' Buildings destroyedThe earthquake, described as the worst to hit Haiti in centuries, was centred 10 miles to the south west of the islands capital, Port-au-Prince. The initial earthquake was followed by two aftershocks measuring 5.9 and 5.5 in magnitude. Many buildings have been devastated including the HQ of the UN mission and the presidential palace. The USA have been quick to respond to the disaster. President Barack Obama said in a statement: 'My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake. We are closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti.'

Haitian Flag  In Haverstraw
The Village of Haverstraw municipal government is willing and able to accept monetary donations from individuals and organizations who would like to donate money for Haitian relief. These donations will be forwarded to responsible groups (such as the Haitian Relief Campaign- see below) to be put to direct use for those in desperate need, and to get supplies/materials to Haiti as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Several members of the Haverstraw Collaborative, as well as many others, attended the meeting this morning across the street from Konbit Neg Lakay, and are involved in helping to mobilize coordinated efforts. There is one group of volunteers, the Haitian Relief Campaign, that has been meeting for many months to look for ways to support Haiti. Ron Figueroa, one of the group's founders, has been working with the Rockland County Haiti Relief Campaign since the summer of 2008.  Other partners include HACSO, Konbit Neg Lakay, Ramapo Haitian Taskforce, Haitian American Nurses Association, Haitian Diaspora Foundation, RC Immigration Coalition, St. Joseph's Church.  They already have an amazing network on the ground in Haiti--  connected with religious groups, civic associations, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Mayor Kohut has been working in conjunction with the Harvest Assembly of God Church on Lincoln Street (Reverend Michel Beaudouin) on relief efforts. Donations of the following are being requested:Dried/Canned food (not expired)Clean Clothing/shoes (children, women, men, young adults)- all sizes Bottles/gallons of water These items may be dropped off either at Village Hall (40 New Main Street), the Haverstraw Center (50 West Broad Street), or Harvest Assembly of God Church(4 Lincoln Street)

From Julie Agoos-My niece, Zoe Agoos, assistant to Dr. Paul Farmer
of Partners in Health, sent this (below) on yesterday to inform their
network of PiH relief work and the need for donations.
As Tracy Kidder noted in his New York Times editorial this morning, Partners in Health has the largest and strongest medical infrastructure in Haiti, and all 10 hospitals and clinics are structurally sound and running since the earthquake. This
organization has a nearly 30 year history in Haiti, and is an ideal organization to donate to since the infrastructure and medical
teams are already in place; theirs were in fact the first doctors on the scene. Please see the links below and disseminate to our community on your website. If you join the Pih email network, you will receive daily briefings on the conditions on the ground in port au Prince through their executive director Ophelia Dahl. Thanks so much for all your information as well.

Over the past 18 hours, Partners In Health staff in Boston and Haiti have
been working to collect as much information as possible about the conditions
on the ground, the relief efforts taking shape, and all relevant logistics
issues in order to respond efficiently and effectively to the most urgent
needs in the field. At the moment, PIH's Chief Medical Officer is on her way
to Haiti, where she will meet with Zanmi Lasante leadership and head
physicians, who are already working to ensure PIH's coordinated relief
efforts leveraging the skills of more than 120 doctors and nearly 500 nurses
and nursing assistants who work at Zanmi Lasante's sites.
We have already begun to implement a two-part strategy to address the
immediate need for emergency medical care in Port-au-Prince. First, we are
organizing the logistics to get the medical staff and supplies needed for
setting up field hospital sites in Port-au-Prince where we can triage
patients, provide emergency care, and send those who need surgery or more
complex treatment to our functioning hospitals and surgical facilities. To
do this, we are creating a supply chain through the Dominican Republic.
Second, we are ensuring that our facilities in the Central Plateau are ready
to serve the flow of patients from Port-au-Prince. Operating and procedure
rooms are staffed, supplied, and equipped for surgeries and we have
converted a church in Cange into a large triage area.

Already our sites in
Cange and Hinche are reporting a steady flow of people coming with medical
needs from the capital city. In the days that come we will need to make sure
our pharmacies and supplies stay stocked and our staff continue to be able
to respond.
Currently, our greatest need is financial
support
Haiti is facing a crisis worse than it has seen in years, and it is a
country that has faced years of crisis, both natural disaster and otherwise.
The country is in need of millions of dollars right now to meet the needs of
the communities hardest hit by the earthquake. Our facilities are
strategically placed just two hours outside of Port-au-Prince and will
inevitably absorb the flow of patients out of the city. In addition, we need
cash on-hand to quickly procure emergency medical supplies, basic living
necessities, as well as transportation and logistics support for the tens of
thousands of people that will be seeking care at mobile field hospitals in
the capital city. Any and all support that will help us respond to the
immediate needs and continue our mission of strengthening the public health
system in Haiti is greatly appreciated. Help us stand up for Haiti
now.
If you are not in a position to make a financial contribution, you can help
us raise awareness of the earthquake tragedy. Please alert your friends to
the situation and direct them to www.pih.org for updates and ways to help.
Thank you for your solidarity during this crisis,

Ophelia Dahl
Executive Director

Update on Haitian Relief Efforts in Nyack and Rockland County 1/15
PHONE: (845) 517-7766
E-MAIL: EAYALA@CMADC.COM

Doctors Delatre Lolo and Childebert St. Louis, two physicians of The Ben Gilman Medical Clinic in Spring Valley, are heading to Haiti to join in the relief effort in the wake of last week's devastating earthquakes. Dr. Lolo will be departing to Haiti on 1.19, while Dr. St. Louis left on 1.18.

The two will be carrying a large amount of medical supplies donated by the Ben Gilman Clinic, including IV units and bags, gauze and other bandages, suture kits, first aid kits, Betadine, Heplock, Kevlix, sterile drapes, splints, and other medical and surgical supplies. Both will be in Haiti for approximately two weeks.

The two doctors, both natives of Haiti, will be traveling with different groups of physicians heading to Haiti for the relief effort. Dr. Lolo will be heading to Haiti with a group of New York City physicians, while Dr. St. Louis went with a group of physicians and other professionals affiliated with the NOAH organization, or the National Organizations for the Advancement of Haitians.

"As a Haitian, I feel compelled to go there and provide care for the victims," said Dr. St. Louis.  "I thank the Gilman Clinic for encouraging me to go, and for participating in this effort.  They have been very supportive," he added. Dr. Lolo agreed. "We are going to do our part in this relief effort to help the people of Haiti who desperately need our assistance."

The Ben Gilman Clinic has teamed up with the Village of Spring Valley in this effort. On Sunday afternoon, Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin joined the administration and doctors of the Gilman Clinic to announce these trips. "I want to thank the Ben Gilman Clinic for its efforts," she said. "It is so important for everyone who can help to do so," she continued.

The Gilman Clinic, located at 175 Route 59, and the Village Hall of Spring Valley, are two locations where anyone wishing to contribute supplies, clothing, or medicines, can drop them off. Anyone with questions on how to join the Ben Gilman Clinic's relief efforts should call the Ben Gilman Clinic at (845) 426-5800.
