Edward Hopper was born and brought up in Nyack. He used many Rockland sites as subjects for his paintings. Maxwell Anderson wrote "What Price Glory"? in New City. Sneden's Landing has long been a mecca for New York's artists and performers. Helen Hayes and Katherine Cornell made their life-long homes in Rockland. Lottie Lenya and Kurt Weill lived here in their greatest days.And that's a small sampling of the internationally-known artists who lived and worked in Rockland County. Their heritage is a constant inspiration to Rockland's many contemporary painters, sculptors, writers and musicians. Not to mention the repertory theatre groups, off-Broadway and original plays and musicals, dance companies, choral and instrumental ensembles, on stage regularly throughout Rockland today. Nyack's Hopper House is a museum of modern art in miniature. Blue Hill Plaza in Pearl River offers art exhibitions that are reviewed by the New York Times. As in the past, numerous visual and performing artists have homes in Rockland County.
